Even though Sheffield Wednesday are doing very similar to what they did last season, there is a lot more negativity about. That’s due to the burden of higher expectations, fans were pleasantly surprised with how well Wednesday did last season, now they expect to be up here and not clinging to a play-off spot for dear life.
Interestingly, the visitors for today’s game Cardiff were the team that were making Wednesday nervous at this time last season and it was only when the Bluebirds were beaten 3-0 by the Owls was their place in the top six secure. This time Cardiff are stuck in mid-table, with Fulham replacing them as the lead chaser, though Wednesday might actually fear them more now.
That’s because they have Neil Warnock in charge, the ultimate pantomime villain for Wednesday. As the last manage that brought their rivals Sheffield United a lot of success, at least until Chris Wilder came along, and having a big personality to exploit that, he had a lot of fun winding up Wednesday fans when they were toiling under the worst of their financial hardships. And even though it has been ten years since Warnock managed United, he still gets under the skin of many Wednesday fans and is usually able to get some sort of result against them.
But not this time. The game was goalless, with Cardiff putting a typical Warnock performance. That was until Jordan Rhodes broke through and while his shot was saved by Allan McGregor, it was then followed up by Fernando Forestieri who would score the only goal of the game.
And as you’d expect, Wednesday fans were happy to win and get one over on Warnock.
Similar game to Rov'rum last season. Difference is, we won and that's all that matters 😊 #swfc
