Colchester: Boss says players will perform well under pressure

Colchester United boss John McGreal is certain that his young squad will be able to cope with the pressure in their push for promotion.

The U’s sit just two points outside the Sky Bet League Two play-offs, heading into two important matches should they wish to return to League One at the first attempt.

The U’s host already-promoted Doncaster Rovers this afternoon, before travelling to Morecambe on Monday.

Despite the season coming to an end quickly, McGreal is confident that the young players will have the mental composure to no wilt under the pressure:

“There’s all to play for and I love this point of the season,” said the U’s Head Coach.

“I’ve been involved in relegations before and it’s tough when you’re down there, scrapping for a win.

“But when you’re at the other table there’s a real buzz and that’s what we’ve got here, knowing we’re only a couple of points outside the play-offs.

“If you look forward to weekends like this and these moments then you’re in the wrong game.

“It brings a different pressure but it’s a pressure the boys are thriving on and enjoying.

“It’s going to be tough because there are six or seven teams around us, all looking to get into the play-offs and with the same aspirations.

“You can’t get ahead of yourself, so it’s about trying to get the right result on Friday [against Doncaster], recovering and then going again on Monday [at Morecambe].

“It’s so exciting and we couldn’t have forecast this, back in November time.

“Four or five months down the line, we’re still in with a shout and all credit goes to the boys.”
