Manchester United midfielder reveals dream of playing for Newcastle

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has revealed that he dreamt of playing for Newcastle United when he was young, according to The Chronicle.

The midfielder revealed his dream in an interview with Match of the Day Magazine but also admitted that the moment for him to sign for Newcastle has now passed.  Carrick, 35, began his career with Wallsend Boys Club before moving to West Ham United at 16.

After a couple of loan moves, Carrick spent two seasons playing for Tottenham Hotspur before moving to Manchester United in 2006.  The midfielder has since gone on to make almost 450 appearances for the club, but could be set to leave this summer with a new deal yet to be agreed.  Carrick is having his testimonial at Old Trafford this summer.

Speaking about potentially signing for Newcastle, Carrick said: “No, I think that’s passed now. When I was a kid I was supporting Newcastle, I dreamt one day I would do but I count myself very fortunate to have played for Manchester United for so long. It’s just one of those things where you can’t have everything. If and when I finish here (Manchester United), that will probably be it I think.”

There has been interest from Newcastle over the years, but Carrick was never close to signing for the club: “I wouldn’t say it was a definite option, but there was certainly interest there, a discussion or two, but there was nothing really.

“It never got to a stage where a decision had to be made, it was just talks and nothing really happened. Its just one of them things, life throws up things but it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Speaking about his own future, Carrick said: “I’m not getting ahead of myself, I’ve been here for so long and I’ve enjoyed it, I won’t be playing for another club in England that’s for sure.

“We’ll see what happens, I haven’t really got any plans past this, I’m just enjoying how it is at the minute and just preparing for my testimonial.”

Newcastle play Leeds United at home this Friday and will be looking to go back top of the Championship table in their hunt for promotion back to the Premier League.
