Leeds United striker Chris Wood was named the Championship’s second best player of the season in last nights Football League awards, with Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Anthony Knockaert stealing the limelight.
The Kiwi has scored 24 Championship goals so far this season for the Whites, with five games still remaining in the campaign- making him the division’s top scorer. Knockaert however has registered an impressive 13 goals from the right hand side of the Seagulls midfield, as well as assisting 8 times; helping the South coast side to pole position in the league.
Wood came second out of three nominees for the best Championship player of the 2016/17 season, with Newcastle’s Dwight Gale rounding up the trio. The £10million man, who arrived at The Toon at the start of the season, is currently second in the Championship goalscorer chart behind Leeds’ number nine on 22 goals. However, Gayle has only played 26 times so far this term after suffering from multiple hamstring injuries; which forced the former Crystal Palace man off in Newcastle’s loss at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday making him a doubt for Leeds’ visit to St. James’ Park this Friday.
The Football League Team of the Season was also officially announced at the awards last night, which featured Wood as well as Leeds’ centre back Pontus Jansson. Fans favourite Jansson arrived from Italian side Torino towards the back end of the summer transfer window, initially on loan however the club have since announced that the Swede will be signing on a permanent basis at the end of the season. The Swedish international has featured 30 times for the club this season, after missing the first ten games of the campaign, and has scored three goals since his arrival. His outstanding performances and solid partnership with fellow centre back Kyle Bartley has gone down extremely well with the fans, and has clearly been noticed by the Football League to feature in the team.
Although Wood missed out on the top prize at the awards, his contribution to the Leeds team this season has been superb, and he will hope to continue his goalscoring season at this vital playoff securing stage in the season.
