Tony Watt, Is this Charlton striker set to leave The Valley again?

Is this Charlton striker set to leave The Valley again?

Tony Watt has completely rebranded his Twitter. The rebrand involves the removal of any signs that he has any involvement with Charlton Athletic. Is there any chance this is a sign he is on his way out, again?

Tony Watt has been on the Charlton financial books and general ledger since 2015, where he joined the Addicks from Belgian giants Standard Liege. However, since then he has been on loan at three other clubs: Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers, and Heart of Midlothian FC.

It was clear he was not settled at Charlton. In fact, it became apparent to fans that he did not want to play for Charlton Athletic anymore, and wanted to play at the next level. At this point, people affiliated with the red Southeast London outfit grew apathy towards the Scottish striker, but never doubted his ability.

However, since his return in January, Tony Watt made clear that he wanted to settle at Charlton, and that he never disliked playing in a Charlton shirt, or ever meant to upset the fans. He said that he needed to return to Scotland at the beginning of the season to deal with injury, and to be around his family.

Karl Robinson spoke out a few weeks ago stating that skipper Johnnie Jackson has been somewhat of a mentor for Tony Watt. The skipper has been mentoring the Scottish striker, helping him settle in Southeast London and connect with Charlton as a club, but also with the loyal fans.

However, despite all the words by him that he was ready to settle down in Southeast London, and prove to everyone that his reputation is simply misunderstood, is it possible he is on his way out in the summer?

The Scotsman’s Twitter profile has undergone a complete transformation, which removed any sign in his profile picture, header, and bio that he has any allegiance to Charlton Athletic. Previously, it was very clear that he did play for Charlton. His profile picture was a shot from the local press during a League One game, his bio was “#7 for Charlton Athletic”, and his header picture was him celebrating with fellow Charlton teammates.

Robinson mentioned previously that he had a lot of tough decisions to make as the season comes to an end. Specifically, in terms of working out which players deserved to stay at The Valley, which could help mount a return to the Sky Bet Championship and who needed to move on in the summer. It is true, that a simple Twitter rebranding and reading into it is nothing more than speculation, but due to Tony Watt’s previous attitude and reputation so to speak, it’ll be interesting to know if he wants to leave in the summer, off his own back, or if Robinson has made clear he will not be part of his plans. Maybe, the majority of us could be wrong and he is set to be a Charlton player for the long-term.

** UPDATE: after writing this article, Tony Watt made the following adjustment to his bio: “Scottish Footballer for CAFC” **
