Sheffield United want Southend star following promotion

Sheffield United have already started to plan for life in the Sky Bet Championship and are looking to sign Southend United’s Ryan Leonard according to a report from The Sun.

The Blades ended their miserable six-year exile in Sky Bet League One when they beat Northampton Town 2-1 yesterday to seal promotion with John Fleck scoring a late winner to send the fans into mad celebrations. But life moves quickly and if United want to be competitive in the Championship, they will need to strengthen their squad and they already looking at targets who can do that for them.

And one of the players United are taking a closer look at is Leonard, someone who has been a star player for Southend over the last few weeks. While the 24-year-old midfielder was unable to play this weekend due to getting sent off in the 3-0 win over Oldham Athletic, that has been the only black mark on his record this season as he has performed very well as Southend have challenged for a place in the League 1 play-offs. They are currently 7th in the table.

And what will make the move very appealing for Sheffield United is that it set to be a bargain as Leonard is out of contract at the end of the season. While there has been no indication that he would turn down an offer from the Shrimpers, he may not be able to resist a chance to play in the Championship and sign for Sheffield United.
