Doncaster boss issues hands off warning on free-scoring striker

Two days ago HITC Sport reported that a number of sides have an interest in Doncaster Rovers’ free-scoring frontman John Marquis, with Norwich, Blackburn and Ipswich said interested.

With sides always looking for a proven goal-scorer, then you can understand how sides such as those named, all who will ply their trade in the Championship next season, will cast eyes down the league structure for proven talent and sharpness in front of goal.

All of these sides will have been drawn to Doncaster Rovers’ hit-man John Marquis, the Londoner having hit 25 so far this campaign for Donny in a campaign that has seen the South Yorkshire side top the table on 81 points with six games remaining – a six-point advantage over second placed Plymouth.

However, in a tweet to his personal Twitter feed (below), BBC Radio Sheffield journalist Jonathan Buchan says that any interested parties can forget about it, unless they come waving a hefty cheque book.

Marquis, who scored a hat-trick in his last game for Rovers, a 5-0 win over Grimsby Town, is said to have caught the eye of his suitors for his consistency in front of goal and the threat that he poses for opposing defenders. Whilst 38 of his 51 league goals (74.5%) have come at the lowest level of English football in League Two, there is little doubt that the 24-year-old has found his shooting boots this season.

Marquis, who only moved to the Keepmoat last summer from Millwall, after coming through youth system at the Lions, could very well line up against his former side next season with Doncaster able to clinch automatic promotion this weekend should results fall their way.
