Derby County: Rangers Rammed past at first time of asking by Rowett

Derby County boss Gary Rowett won his first home game as Rams boss, defeating Queens Park Rangers 1-0 last night.

The win moves the Derbyshire side six points behind sixth-placed Sheffield Wednesday, with seven League ties still to be played this season.

County’s own goal of the game came with just twenty minutes left on the clock. Matej Vydra latched onto Alex Smithies’ save, after denying Tom Ince’s driven effort, and struck high into the net.

The visitors rallied late on for an equaliser at Pride Park, but all they could muster was missed chances as Idrissa Sylla saw his header rebound off the post – signally a second loss in eight games for Ian Holloway’s side.

Rangers failed to impress in the attacking department, whereas an impressive second-half performance from the Rams allowed Rowett to claim his first three points after he drew his first game at local rivals Nottingham Forest.

The Rams should have had a larger advantage as Johnny Russell saw plenty of chances go begging during a lacklustre first half, while Smithies also denied a strong effort from David Nugent.

Derby looked destined to be punished for their lack of a clinical edge, however Czech striker Vydra managed to grab a goal and, consequently, the three points.

Speaking after his victory, a proud Rams boss said: “To win is important, but for me the way we went about it was just as pleasing.

“It was a little bit tentative at times in the opening ten minutes and we were a bit safe with our passing, but after that, we grew into the game and showed more belief.

“In the end we deserved it but the result is gone now, and the focus is on the big test against Fulham on Tuesday.”
