Leeds United defender ‘cancelled contract’ situation clarified

When Leeds United first brought in Giuseppe Bellusci, fans were in mini-raptures at his arrival. He is now out on loan at Serie A side Empoli and there were bigger raptures about that when he departed at the start of this season.

News came through earlier today that his contract may have been mutually cancelled by Leeds United and Bellusci, bringing about an upsurge in rapture from Leeds fans happy to be rid of his said darkening presence at the club. However, this ‘contract cancellation’ might not be as clear-cut as first seems.

On a footballing front, central defender Giuseppe Bellusci was at first praised by Leeds United fans for his committed approach when signing from Catania in August 2014. However, this fan love-in certainly didn’t last long, and he went from his fan-gifted nickname of ‘The Warrior’ to the fan-dreaded ‘The Worrier’ as creaky performances and rash decision-making started to edge in to his game.

After becoming what some fans saw as a ‘pit of vipers influence’ at the club, with much skullduggery hinted at behind the scenes, and much public falling out on Twitter, Leeds United and Bellusci negotiated a season’s loan deal for him to head back to his native Italy and to Serie A with Empoli.

Since arriving in Italy at the start of the season, Italian defender Bellusci has made 26 appearances, scoring one goal and accumulating 12 yellow cards, for an Empoli side that currently sit in 17th place in the Serie A standings, conceding 46 times.

Then, via Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay’s personal Twitter feed  (below) came news that the Italian and Leeds United had ‘agreed’ a mutual termination of his contract – a date set as July 4 2016 according to the supporting FA document.

This ‘termination date’ obviously came at the end of the season suggesting that Bellusci’s ‘parting of ways’ had been decided with full knowledge of new head coach Garry Monk, whose arrival at the club was on June 2 – a whole month ahead of the Italian returning home to ply his trade in Italy.

With many celebrating the ‘termination’ of Bellusci’s contract, BBC Radio Leeds reporter Adam Pope added a level of further clarification to matters, saying that the cancellation of Bellusci’s contract was normal procedure.

Whilst the news from Adam Pope may cap some of the rapturous celebrations from Leeds United fans, Popey’s view that Bellusci is unlikely to return to Leeds United to exercise the fourth and final year of his contract will at least gladden those that are disappointed.
