Karl Robinson has endorsed his former colleague Alex Rae to become Pedro Caixinha’s assistant manager at the Ibrox stadium, according to HITC Sport and the Daily Record.
Alex Rae who is a former Rangers star at the Ibrox, worked as a coach under Karl Robinson, during his six-year stint at Milton Keynes, between 2010 and 2016. Since the announcement of Pedro Caixinha taking over the managerial reigns at the Ibrox, Rangers’ Chairman, Dave King has publicly said that he is giving Caixinha full control to decide who he wants to bring into his backroom team. One of the first major decisions Caixinha has to deal with, is who his number two will be?
It is understood that Rangers are interested in appointing Rae as the assistant manager under Caixinha. In fact, it has been reported, that Rae has already held one-on-one discussions with the newly appointed manager.
Alex Rae is currently looking like a strong candidate to be appointed as Caixinha’s assistant, due to his previous managerial experience in Scotland with Dundee and St. Mirren, as well as his experience as a professional footballer in Scotland.
To add to Rae’s candidacy, Charlton manager, Karl Robinson endorsed and provided a strong recommendation for Rae to become assistant manager, or at the very least be found a role at the Scottish giants’ outfit.
“There are a lot of good people in Scotland and Alex is one of them,” Robinson told The Daily Record last month.
“He scouts for me up there and I can’t believe people seem to overlook him with his knowledge, experience and passion for Rangers.
“Everything about Alex is Rangers. His passion is incredible. Whether you play him at football, golf or even table tennis, Alex still wants to fight you!”
Karl Robinson also endorsed Rangers’ to steal Tottenham’s Head of Recruitment, Paul Mitchell. Speaking to The Daily Record, the Charlton manager had a lot to say, as Robinson gave Mitchell his first scouting job at MK Dons back in 2010.
“If Rangers go for Paul, he’d be a terrific appointment. If you look at the clubs he’s been at, MK Dons, Southampton and Spurs, he’s always had amazing success.
“He’s been able to capture players for those clubs who have gone on to be really successful.
“And Paul’s a top fella as well. He started working for me at MK Dons many years ago and he’s gone on to do really well.
“He’s been very successful wherever he’s been and that’s why he’s so highly regarded within the game now.
“That’s testament to the man himself and he deserves real credit.
“He’s so driven as a person. But more importantly, he’s not driven by money.
“That means that when he’s doing a deal, the player in question has to want to play for the club or it won’t happen.
“Paul’s very clear and precise in his message. He managed to bring players like Patrick Bamford to MK Dons, who was a big part of what we achieved during that period of time.
“But it wasn’t just about the players Paul brought in for us.
“It’s about what he set up behind the scenes for MK Dons to carry on as a club.
“He was then involved in the Southampton set-up and look at the players they’ve brought in over the last few years.
“I believe he was an integral part in getting the likes of Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic to that club and everyone knows how successful they’ve been. He obviously helped get Dele Alli over to Spurs as well after seeing him as a kid at MK Dons.
“I still speak to Paul because our kids go to the same school. So I see him on the school run quite often. He’s a really good guy.”
“Regardless of what anyone says, Glasgow Rangers are still one of the biggest clubs in the world. They’re an institution.
“Glasgow is a great city as well so it’s a job that people like Paul might see as one of the best challenges in British football.
“For anyone going into a football club, they want a blank canvas. Because it gives you an opportunity to put your stamp on it. Rangers have done wonderfully well in the last two years to get to where they are today.
“From the outside looking in, they’ve got another step to go before the club becomes really successful again. And getting someone like Paul Mitchell in would be a real statement of intent from the club.
“I can see why they’d go for Paul, because of what he’s done in the past. His record at clubs is there for everyone to see in black and white. He’s young as well so there’s a youth and energy about him.”
