Newcastle United target £15 million Premier League midfielder

Championship side Newcastle United are targeting Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurðsson this summer to be their main man in the Premier League next season, according to The Sun.

Newcastle are currently top of the Championship table, one point clear of Brighton & Hove Albion in second and have already started planning for Premier League football next season.  Boss Rafa Benitez wants Mike Ashley to provide him with the funds to make sure Newcastle can compete in the top division.

Benitez believes that one player who can help the club do this is Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurðsson.  The Iceland international has been in great form once again this season, scoring nine goals in 31 appearances in all competitions.

Swansea boss Paul Clement has been raving about the midfielder’s performances of late, and will not want to lose Sigurðsson this summer.  However, the player himself has spoken of his desire to move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Sigurðsson spent a couple of seasons with Tottenham Hotspur but wasn’t always a regular starter during his second season with the club.  With Swansea however, Sigurðsson is generally the first name of the team sheet.  Regular first-team football will be something that the midfielder has to consider when he thinks about a move this summer.

Sigurðsson signing for Newcastle United at the end of the season might be a long-shot, but the club will seemingly make a £15 million bid in the summer, which could tempt Swansea.
