FL Awards: Newcastle, Leeds and Brighton trio named as the best

The nominations for the annual Football League awards have been announced, with players from Newcastle United, Leeds United and Brighton & Hove Albion leading the way.

The trio of players make up the three nominees for the most prestigious of the awards, the EFL Championship Player of the Year.

Leeds United’s Chris Wood is the first of three players nominated for the hotly-contested award. The 25-year-old front man leads the goalscoring table, with the New Zealander netting 24 times so far this season. The striker has been instrumental in the Whites’ performances this season, with the Yorkshire side currently sitting fourth in the Sky Bet Championship.

Next is the League leaders, Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle. The Magpies look set for a return to the Barclays Premier League at the first time of asking, and they will no doubt want to thank Gayle for his fine form throughout the season. Gayle is just three goals behind Wood and United fans will be hoping that he can continue to fire the Magpies to the top flight of English football.

Finally is Brighton & Hove Albions’ Anthony Knockaert. The tricky midfielder ranks as the highest-scoring midfielder so far this season, netting 13 league goals for the Seagulls. The Frenchman has, similarly to his fellow nominees, played a highly instrumental role in the Seasiders’ high league position – with the Seagulls knocking on the door of the Premier League.

Shaun Harvey, Chief Executive of the EFL, said: “It’s been an exciting and action-packed 12 months for the EFL both on and off the pitch. There have been some incredible individual and team performances across the three divisions, entertaining the millions of fans who follow the EFL week in, week out.

“Off the pitch our clubs continue to have a positive and lasting impact in their local communities, using the power of football to deliver life-changing programmes and activities.

“The EFL Awards are a fantastic way to recognise the achievements of clubs, players, back room staff and fans and I would like to personally congratulate everyone who has been nominated and wish them all the best on the night itself.”
