Zola applied for Inter Milan job in November

Birmingham City manager Gianfranco Zola is thought to have applied for the managerial vacancy at Italian giants Inter Milan prior to being appointed The Blues’ new boss according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 50-year-old former Chelsea striker has endured a difficult time at St Andrews after winning just two of his first  19 matches in charge of the club.

It is now believed that Zola had applied for the Inter Milan vacancy following former manager Frank de Boer’s sacking in early November. Zola is said to have been interviewed by The Cherished One but was not considered as a front runner for the job with former Lazio manager Stefano Pioli being appointed at the San Siro.

After taking over from popular boss Gary Rowett at St Andrews after his controversial sacking, Zola has struggled to steer Birmingham City away from a complete collapse and the club now find themselves just five points above the relegation zone in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Blues may just have enough to secure safety but the early days of Zola’s Birmingham City tenure have been less than impressive and the Italian is under pressure. The club’s owners have previously proved that they have little patience when waiting for success and should results not improve, Zola could find himself out of work.
