EFL Veteran slams Charlton Athletic’s campaign as a “Waste”

Returning defender Jason Pearce, who has had experience leading and captaining several sides in the Football League, has slammed Charlton’s 2016/17 season as being a “waste”, when speaking to the London News Online.

Adding fuel to the fire which many Charlton fans will be igniting, as it is clear Katrien Meire’s objective for top six minimum has been an absolute failure, Jason Pearce, has declared Charlton’s 2016/2017 campaign as an absolute “waste”.

Jason Pearce, a stalwart defender in the Football League, has led and captained sides at the likes of Bournemouth, Leeds United, Portsmouth, and had a vital role last season in leading Wigan Athletic to the League One title.

Back in December against Bradford City, Jason Pearce, ruptured his groin jumping for a header with James Hanson, but when he came back down, he was unable to get back up.

The defender has confirmed he should be ready for a return to the squad in time for the Addicks trip to the ABAX stadium, to take on Peterborough United on the 1st April.

Speaking to the London News Online, in regards to Charlton’s current predicament, Jason Pearce had a lot to say.

“We’ve massively underachieved and it’s massively disappointing,” said Pearce. “Before I got injured we were sat in quite a good position – a few points off the play-offs. Now we are six points off the relegation zone.

“I said when I got injured I was hoping to get back and help the team get in the top six, but it is a different conversation now. I want to be out there making sure we don’t go down.

“For me, it has been a waste of a season.

“There are lots of teams in the past that people have said are too good to go down – that is not the case. Our current form isn’t good enough. We could easily go down but have got to pull together and make sure we get the couple of results we need before we rebuild for next season.”

Back in late January, after Charlton showed a superb performance against Bristol Rovers, where the Addicks romped the Gas 4-1 at The Valley, there was a raised optimism that a strong push in the second half of the season would launch the Southeast London outfit into the top six. This optimistic prediction was also supported by the fact that in February, Charlton had a list of clustered fixtures against sides below them in the table, who were closer to League Two, than they were the Championship.

However, a combined lack of mental fortitude in the back five, saw Charlton leak goals in the closing stages of the game, in consequence dropping a significant number of points. In fact, in the last 12 games, whereby there were a possible 36 points for the taking, Charlton have succeeded in only picking up a grand total of 8. The Charlton faithful have witnessed some dismal performances, including a 4-3 defeat to Shrewsbury Town, and a 2-1 defeat to Northampton Town to select just a couple of disappointments.

It is no coincidence, Charlton have seen themselves plummet down the League table and succumb to shocking defeats when Jason Pearce has been absent. A lack of vocal and commanding leadership in the back five (including Rudd), means that opponents have been able to capitalise on defensive mistakes. The good news is, with Jason Pearce’s return, a true commander and defender of the Football League, the very blunt and honest Addick will address the issue.
