Leeds, Leeds United could hand goalkeeper new deal

Leeds United could hand goalkeeper new deal

Championship side Leeds United may be about to hand a new deal to back-up goalkeeper Marco Silvestri, according to Tutto Mercato Web.

Rob Green is currently Leeds’ first choice goalkeeper, and is in very good form.  This means that Silvestri, 26, hasn’t made a Championship appearance this season.  The Italian has played six times in the EFL Cup and FA Cup, however.  His current deal expires at the end of next season.

Silvestri began his career with Modena before signing for Serie A side Chievo in 2010.  The goalkeeper was loaned out three times; to Reggiana, Padova and Cagliari.  Playing almost 60 whilst out on loan, Silvestri picked up vital experience that helped his development.

However Silvestri’s long-term plans where changed when Leeds United signed the goalkeeper for £400,000 in July 2014.  The goalkeeper played 43 league games in his first season with the club and was nominated for Fans Player of the Year.

He made a total of 48 appearances in all competitions for Leeds during his second season with the club, despite the signing of Ross Turnbull.  However, Leeds signed Rob Green this summer and it is obvious that the Englishman is boss Garry Monk’s first choice.

People may have expected Silvestri to leave the club, but it looks as if the opposite could be about to happen with Leeds now considering a new deal.  Leeds will want to keep hold of the player, as having a back-up goalkeeper with so much Championship experience is rare.

However, Silvestri may decide that he wants more game time and that the right decision would be to leave Leeds United this summer.
