Magpies boss eyes move for Burnley midfielder

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez could make a move for Burnley midfielder Scott Arfield in the summer according to the Daily Star.

The 28-year-old Scotland international has a little over 12 months remaining on his current deal with The Clarets with Arfield having joined the Lancashire club as a free agent in summer 2013.

Arfield has played an influential role for Burnley in the Premier League this season and manager Sean Dyche is understood to be desperate to hold on to the player for the long term however Newcastle United boss Benitez is thought to have other ideas and could try to tempt the midfielder to St James’ Park.

The experienced campaigner started his career North of the Border with Falkirk and the player went on to make 124 appearances and scored 16 goals for The Bairns. In May 2010, Arfield moved to England to join Huddersfield Town in a deal reportedly worth up to £600,000 and the Scot went on to help The Terriers secure a long awaited return to the Sky Bet Championship.

Since joining current club Burnley, Arfield has developed further into a quality midfielder and the player has proved that he has what it takes to consistently perform in the Premier League. With Newcastle United destined for the top flight, Arfield is a player who could be relied upon by Magpies boss Benitez and the Tyensiders could test Burnley’s resolve in the summer with a serious transfer offer.
