Leeds United – new details of Antonsson deal emerge

When Leeds United brought in Swedish striker Marcus Antonsson from Kalmar FF, he arrived at Elland Road and Leeds United with the Swedish league programme entering a mid-term break.

Antonsson also arrived with the billing of being the then top scorer in the Allsvenskan with a return of 10 goals across 12 appearances. One thing was for sure, he knew where the goal was. Only two players went on to beat that total in IFK Norrkoeping’s Swedish striker Emir Kujovic (21 goals) and AIK’s Henok Goitem (18 goals). Antonsson’s haul of 12 goals included four penalties and he opened the scoring on three occasions.

Rumours were that Antonsson had signed for Leeds United in a deal that was said to rise to a potential £2m value with add-ons and incentives increasing the initial price paid. However, in an article relayed on the Barometern website, further details appear that flesh out the sparse details of the deal.

In an interview with Barometern’s David Winberg, Kalmar FF president Mattias Rosenlund let on that Leeds United had agreed to pay for striker Antonsson in three distinct payments. On this matter Rosenlund said: “[The] Antonsson affair is stated and done, the transaction is made in 2016. We have got a third of the payment, we get the second in the summer and the third in December.

Antonsson has found that he has played only a bit-part in his first season of English football, the 21-goal form of Sky Bet Championship leading scorer Chris Wood condemning the Swede to a bench place at best. Even that has become somewhat a forlorn hope of late for Antonsson, a striker who has scored three times in 21 appearances for the Whites – two of these being in the EFL Cup.

Antonsson’s last actual appearance for Leeds United was an eight-minute cameo in the 3-0 win against Rotherham, the Swede having only made three appearances since the end on November 2016 totalling 24 minutes on the pitch. He last appeared in the Whites match day 18 for the away draw at Fulham on March 7, a game where a 95th minute Tom Cairney equaliser cancelled out a Tim Ream own-goal that gave the Whites a 5th minute lead.
