Brighton Win Breaks Elland Road Record

Saturday’s 2-0 win over promotion chasing Brighton saw United keep their 11th clean sheet at Elland Road so far this season in the Championship – something the club has never achieved.

The first three games played at Elland Road this season saw Leeds achieve just a single point, which was achieved through a dramatic late Chris Wood overhead kick to secure a 1-1 draw with Fulham. Since then The Whites have lost just two games at home, and have picked up 41 points out of a possible 51,  seeing the club climb up the table after a shaky start to the season. United have scored 26 out of a total 52 goals at home, while conceding a miniscule 12 goals, and just three in the last 11 home fixtures; making Elland Road a fortress once again.

This impressive form has also seen Leeds to their highest position in the league table during the Cellino era, with the club sitting comfortably in the Championship Play-offs in fourth position; eight points ahead of the Play-off chasing Fulham in 7th place following Saturdays victory.

Furthermore, another noticeable stat is that so far this season Leeds have scored 21 of their 52 total goals via set pieces, more than any other season in the Championship. This has a lot to do with the magic delivery of magician Pablo Hernandez, who since arriving from Qatar club Al-Arabi in the summer has been put on set piece duty; both on free-kicks and corners from either side. This has resulted in center-backs Pontus Jansson and Karl Bartley scoring seven goals between them from corners this season, with corner goals previously never linked with Leeds United – with Leeds fans frequently reminding one another of Rob Hulse’s goal from a corner against Burnley in 2004 prior to this season as being the last goal from a corner kick (although slightly exaggerated).

United and manager Garry Monk will hope to continue their good form, both home and away from Elland Road, as well as to continue to provide an alternative goal supply, such at set pieces, rather than relying on top goalscorer Chris Wood to keep coming up with the goods.
