Former England stopper Rob Green has been one of the players credited with keeping Leeds United in and amongst the Play-Off places coming to the business end of the season. Now, according to a document on the FA website, it appears that he’s been rewarded by the Whites for his form.

Green arrived at Elland Road in the summer of last year as a free agent, after having been released without being offered a new contract by QPR. Many fans were convinced, when the signing was announced, that Green’s best days were behind him and that the 12-cap England keeper was but a shadow of his former self.

However, a string of solid performances behind an improving back four has seen many a Leeds United fan having to revise what they said about Green earlier in the season. Green has featured in all 37 of Leeds’ games this season in the Sky Bet Championship, conceding 36 times but more importantly keeping 13 clean sheets.

From a 3-0 humbling opening day defeat against former club QPR, Green and Leeds United have gone from strength to strength, climbing out of the bottom three after six games and into the top six with nine games of the season left to go.

Playing such an important part for Leeds United has paid dividends for Green with reports claiming, and seemingly supported by local reporter Phil Hay, that the FA’s ‘Monthly Bulletins – Players under Written Contract’ document for February shows that a new deal has been agreed between club and player – a deal supposedly inked between the two on February 23 this year. Of the linked document, the FA website says: “Below are lists of Players under Written Contract providing the latest records of Player registration at Clubs.”

The issue of Rob Green and a potentially extended contract at Leeds United was one that had been long mooted as being something that would happen – with the extension being one based around reaching a certain number of appearances. This was something that Leeds United reporter and BBC journalist Adam Pope mulled over on his personal Twitter account (below).

Whilst “nothing has officially been announced yet”, to quote Pope’s second tweet, by Leeds United, it is interesting that Rob Green features on the FA’s ‘Monthly Bulletins – Players under Written Contract’ with an entry showing for February 23.
