Championship side Birmingham City are taking an interest in former Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson, according to Sunday’s print edition of The Sun.
Birmingham are currently managed by Gianfranco Zola, but the club sit in 17th in the Championship table with only nine games left to play. Now only six points away from the relegation zone, the West Midlands club may feel they have to make a change in order to avoid relegation this season.
Zola was appointed Birmingham manager back in December 2016 with the club just outside of the play-off positions. However the Italian had to wait until his eleventh game in charge for his first win. Birmingham have won only two of Zola’s 18 games in charge, losing 11.
Former Leicester manager Nigel Pearson was most recently manager of Championship side Derby County. Pearson was appointed back in May 2016 but was sacked in October after only 14 games in charge at the club. Derby had won only three games during this time.
Perhaps what Pearson is best known for is his time at Leicester City during the 2014/15 season. His club were bottom at Christmas, but pulled off an astonishing comeback and stayed in the Premier League following a 0-0 draw with Sunderland. However Pearson was controversially sacked at the end of the season.
Leicester recently sacked title-winning manager Claudio Ranieri and Pearson has been linked with a return to the club. However the Birmingham job may come up sooner for Pearson with Craig Shakespeare getting the Leicester job until the end of the season.
If Pearson does get the Birmingham job, his first task will be to keep the club in the Championship.
