Derby County sack McClaren for the second time – bookies Top 5 replacements

Roy Hodgson – 14/1

It’s been an almighty fall from grace for the former England manager, who masterminded England’s 2-1 defeat to EURO 2016 minnows Iceland.

Hodgson’s spell as England manager didn’t go as any would’ve hoped, and he’s been out of a job ever since his resignation following our exit from EURO 2016.

Despite this, it’s hard to doubt his pedigree. You don’t get the experience of managing England, Liverpool, Fulham and West Brom without having any redeeming features, and there’s no reason to suggest he won’t be able to get the best out of an underperforming Derby side.

As the fourth favourite for the role it’s clear Derby would rather opt for a more youthful, long-term approach, but maybe a short-term fix is needed, and if so, Hodgson could be the ideal man for the job.

Chris Powell – 12/1

After a spell as caretaker manager of Norwich back in 2010, Powell was appointed as manager of Charlton in 2011 – a club for whom he turned out almost 250 times in his playing career.

His spell in the capital lasted for 3 years, but upon the arrival of controversial owner Roland Duchatelet, he was dismissed.

A short and uneventful spell as Huddersfield Town manager ensued, where he was harshly sacked in 2015 with the Terriers sitting in lower mid-table. However looking back on the successes of David Wagner, the decision seems to have been for the better.

Since then he has been Derby’s assistant manager, and will takeover as caretaker manager until a permanent candidate is chosen. Should he impress during his stint as caretaker, he could get the deal on a permanent basis.
