Norwich City part ways with Alex Neil

With 10 games remaining until the end of the season, Norwich City have parted ways with manager Alex Neil, as explained by the Official Club Statement.

The former Hamilton Academical defender won promotion with the Canaries in 2015, but was unable to keep them up, and they were relegated back down to the Championship last season.

Norwich currently sit 8th in the Championship, 9 points off 6th placed Sheffield Wednesday, and a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of the Owls all but sealed Neil’s fate, before a 1-1 draw with lowly Bristol City hammered the final nail into his coffin.

Neil was a popular figure around Carrow Road after guiding Norwich to the Premier League, and despite relegation, he was still seen as the ideal man to bring them back up.

However, big money signings such as Timm Klose and Steven Naismith have been underwhelming, and a failure to replace the departed Nathan Redmond has hindered a shot at a Play-Off push.

In the statement, it was stated: The Board has taken the tough but unanimous decision, believing it is in the best interests of the Club for a new manager to be in place through a crucial summer transfer window and into next season.”

This clearly shows the Canaries are looking for some long-term stability, and Alex Neil definitely didn’t offer that. After the 5-1 defeat to Wednesday, Neil was a dead man walking, so the decision to relieve him of his duties will come as no surprise.

Alan Irvine will take over as caretaker manager for now, but former Birmingham boss Gary Rowett has already been benchmarked as the firm favourite.
