Sheffield United star wins Player of the Month

Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp has been named the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for February, as announced on the EFL website today.

The 31-year-old quickly became a fan favourite at Bramall Lane last season after re-signing for his boyhood club and Sharp has fired his team to the top of League One this term.

In February, the striker was prolific as Sheffield United extended the points gap between promotion rivals and themselves. Sharp scored five goals in five games, including an 87th-minute winner at Peterborough United and a brace against fourth-placed Bolton Wanderers. The Blades captain currently has 26 goals to his name for the 2016/17 campaign and is the league’s top scorer but was quick to thank his team mates upon winning the award, “It’s always nice to win the personal awards, but I have to thank my team-mates and the staff for showing belief in me.

“The quality we have throughout the team gives me the platform to show what I can do by scoring goals and everyone knows what type of striker I am. I’m delighted to win it but it’s for everyone.”

Manager Chris Wilder was also pleased to see his star striker pick up the accolade, “Billy epitomises the spirit we have at the club and although it is a personal award I’m sure he will be the first to say it is a team effort.

“His goals have been invaluable for us, not just in February, but throughout the season.”

Following a minor blip in January, Sheffield United are now within touching distance of the Championship. The South Yorkshire club’s fixture against Millwall at the weekend was postponed with the Lions still competing in the FA Cup but Wilder’s men face a trip to Swindon Town on Tuesday. The Wiltshire club have fallen into the relegation zone and suffered a 1-0 loss to Chesterfield last week.
