Newcastle United lose key international defender to thigh injury

Newcastle United head coach Rafa Benitez has confirmed to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle that DeAndre Yedlin is set for a spell on the sidelines. The right back suffered the problem in the away victory over Brighotn & Hove Albion, forcing him to sit out Tuesday’s 0-0 draw at Reading.

Jesus Gamez, a summer signing from La Liga side Atletico Madrid, made a surprising start in the full back area at the Madejski Stadium. Vurnon Anita was left on the bench after he started at the weekend but has only just recovered from a return injury of his own. Yedlin, a USA international, will be out of action for ‘one or two weeks’.

Yedlin has certainly been a big success at St James’ Park since making the move from Tottenham Hotspur. The former Sunderland loanee has established himself as one of the best full backs in the Sky Bet Championship, with his pace causing plenty of problems for both opposing left backs in attack and opposing left wingers defensively. Benitez revealed after the Reading game that Yedlin has picked up an injury,

“Yedlin didn’t realise he had the problem against Brighton. We protected him against Huddersfield, but he had to come on.

“But he was complaining, and you could see that maybe it would be one week or two weeks. He had a knock, maybe has a small tear.

“The main thing is we’ve shown we’re strong enough and we can come to grounds where the home team is playing well and has all the possession and we still have it in us to win games.”

Newcastle look to extend their stay at the summit of the English second-tier when in-form Fulham are the visitors on Saturday.
