Birmingham City 1-3 Leeds United – Chris Wood double gives Leeds three points

A Chris Wood double combined with Alfonso Pedraza’s first goal for the club gave Leeds United a 3-1 victory over Birmingham City on Friday night.

Wood gave Leeds the lead with 14 minutes played. The striker latched onto a long ball forward and lobbed over Tomasz Kuszczak who had left his line to score his 24th goal of the season.

Birmingham came close to drawing level when Robert Tesche’s 30-yard effort rocketed the bar, but the Whites defence were able to keep out the hosts to hold a 1-0 advantage at half-time.

Rob Green was called into action on multiple occasions early in the second half – the highlight being a fine low save to the goalkeepers’ left to prevent Che Adams from finding the net.

Craig Gardner puts Birmingham level just past the hour mark. A spell of City pressure paid off when Gardner connected with a the ball from 25 yards out and his shot beat Green low to his right.

Leeds were behind for all of four minutes. Souleymane Doukara found Kalvin Phillips in the box, he then passed to Wood who tapped in from six yards out to put the Whites 2-1 up.

The substitute Pedraza got his first goal in a Leeds shirt with 81 minutes of the game played. Pablo Hernandez found the winger out to the left of the area, and he made no mistake in driving a low shot into the opposite goal to put the visitors 3-1 ahead.

The result keeps Leeds United in 4th place ahead of Saturday’s fixtures, 11 points clear of seventh-placed Fulham who host Preston North End at the weekend.
