Carlos Carvalhal backs Barry Bannan after being dropped

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal has told the Sheffield Star that Barry Bannan will still play a big part in their season despite being dropped from the first team.

When the Owls named their team to face Leeds United on Saturday, many were surprised to see that Bannan had been left out of the first with the Scottish international instead having to cope with a place on the bench. He has been a regular for the South Yorkshire club since he signed for Crystal Palace and while he did eventually get onto the pitch as a substitute, he wasn’t able to do much as Leeds won the derby 1-0.

Many believe that Bannan may end up being a regular on the bench from now on, especially with summer signing Almen Abdi finally starting to impress after months being labelled as a flop. But Carvalhal has now come out and said that Bannan will not be forgotten for the rest of the season and that he will still be a key player for the team as they look to seal their place in the Sky Bet Championship play-offs.

He said: “We decided to play players who have more energy at the moment,”

“Barry is a very important player to us.”

“He’s a fundamental player in our squad and I hope he comes very soon to the normal level.”

Bannan may get a chance to return to the Sheffield Wednesday first team for the match against Norwich City on Saturday, a game which will be key if the Owls want to stay in the play-off places.
