David Davis reveals enjoyment of derby matches

Birmingham City’s David Davis has revealed to the Birmingham Mail how much he enjoys playing in derby matches.

Over the last few months, Davis has got a reputation for being a player that seriously ups his game when a local derby comes round. Earlier in the season he was the one who became the hero of St Andrews when he equalised for them in the Second City derby match against Aston Villa. He then confirmed that reputation by scoring the second goal in a 2-1 win against Wolves, his former club as well as Birmingham’s West Midlands rivals.

And for Davis, the reason he believes he plays so well in these matches is that he enjoys the atmosphere and stakes of a local derby match. He always likes to get stuck in and set the tempo of the game but these tense exciting matches allows him to do his thing and be the man who grabs the headlines.

He said: “Every derby game I enjoy myself,”

“I’m the type of player who likes to get stuck in and I like to set the tempo for the rest of the lads.”

“These games are what they are.”

“I thought everyone was a leader.”

“Things just haven’t gone right for us at times, and it’s easy to say that.”

“(Against Wolves) We just had to grind it out, get back to basics and simply get the three points at any cost.”

“We had a game plan and the gaffer reiterated it all week.”

“We’ve been working hard on it, but I think it was just mainly down to working hard and at times, especially when we went down to ten men, you saw ten leaders on the pitch.”

“Even down to (Cheick) Keita, he hasn’t really played much English football, but he dug it out and stuck with us.”
