Reading boss ready to challenge young defender

Reading manager Jaap Stam is considering easing young defender Rob Dickie into first team action at The Madejski Stadium after being impressed by the player according to Get Reading.

The 20-year-old Wokingham born defender is a product of the Berkshire club’s academy system and the youngster has gone on to make just one senior appearance for The Royals to date in a Sky Bet Championship fixture last season.

Reading boss Stam is yet to witness Dickie’s first team potential first hand and the Dutchman has confirmed that he is looking for the player to step up into the first team environment in the coming weeks.

Dickie has been loaned out to Cheltenham Town on two occasions in the past 18 months with the player helping The Robins secure promotion back to the English Football League last season. The youngster has made 57 appearances during his spells at Whaddon Road while Dickie has weighed in with an impressive eight goals for the club.

The defender returned to parent club Reading last month and has been in impressive form for The Royals’ development squad in the Premier League 2 in recent weeks. Those promising performances have clearly made a positive impression upon Reading boss Stam who is now prepared to offer the youngster a chance to shine at The Madejski Stadium.
