Reading midfielder hails Jaap Stam as a tactical genius

Reading’s Danny Williams had told the Reading Chronicle that he thinks that his head coach Jaap Stam is a tactical genius.

Even though Brentford are much lower in the table than promotion chasing Reading, the Royals were to be without many of their key players with Tiago Ilori, Stephen Quinn and Deniss Rakels all being ruled out of that match. This meant that Stam was forced to field a line up very different from the one he would usually put out.

At first it seemed like those injuries would cost Reading, with the Bees racing into a 2-1 lead after goals from Jota and Lasse Vibe gave them the lead after John Swift’s opener. But Stam changed a few things around on the fly in the second half and they claimed a great fight back victory when Williams and Roy Beerens gave them a late victory.

Obviously feeling quite happy with this, Williams decided to lavish praise on his boss and call him a tactical genius after leading them to victory. He said: “We all know the manager has been unbelievable.”

“It also shows a lot about the character of the players because we have all shown we are willing to adapt to different systems.”

“Garath knows it’s not about him and I know it’s not about me, we have our preferred positions but if the manager thinks it’s best to play us in other positions then that’s what we will do.”

“I’m sure there are other teams where players wouldn’t be happy if they were asked to do that.”
