Chris Hughton gives his take on the Sky Bet Championship promotion race

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton has told The Argus that the Sky Bet Championship automatic promotion race is still extremely competition. Second-placed Brighton still six points clear of Huddersfield Town in third, and Hughton maintains that the top two still have a long way to go.

Brighton have been in either first or second spot in the English second tier for some time, along with Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United, who currently sit top of the table. Four wins in a row and dropped points from the top two has given David Wagner’s Huddersfield some hope in jumping into a top two position.

Reading and Leeds United have been settled inside the play-off positions themselves, along with Huddersfield, for many weeks as well, but dropped points of late has seen them fall short in every trying to break into the top two in recent times. The battle for the play-offs is just as competitive as it is every year, but focusing on the top two, Hughton says the top two is more than Brighton and Newcastle,

“We’ve been aware of them all season. It’s impossible for us not to be and it’s not just Huddersfield.

“There are a group of teams below us at the moment that are all capable of going on very good runs, because of the good qualities they have got.

“I know there is that small gap between Newcastle, ourselves and the others, but it’s certainly not just about two teams, it’s about a group of teams.

“And any of them can finish in that top two. That’s why we have to be conscious of them and we have to be guarded.”

Tonight, Brighton look to make it back-to-back victories when they take on Ipswich Town at the Amex Stadium, whilst Newcastle travel to Norwich City for a tricky encounter.
