Sacked Bristol City steward files for unfair dismissal after striker joined from rivals

Speaking to The Sun, Mark Watson, a steward who worked at Bristol City, is claiming unfair dismissal from the club after he was relived of his duties last month. Watson released a video on Facebook where he slated striker Matty Taylor, who left Bristol Rovers to join local rivals City in the transfer window.

Taylor certainly created a storm by swapping Bristol Rovers for Bristol City and Watson elected to vent his anger at the player using social media. He states that the video, where he called Taylor a ‘c***’, was ‘banter’, and that he has the maximum privacy settings on his Facebook page, believing he is therefore entitled to relay his own opinions to his friends.

Watson was employed on a zero hours contract at Ashton Gate, and has been for the last three years. Bristol Sport, who own the stadium, made contact with him on January 2nd after being made aware of the online video and told him his services were no longer required. Watson insists he has been harshly treated considering how within the football community people open express their views all of the time,

“It was banter, you see it a lot in the football community and I certainly wasn’t the only one with something to say that day.

“As far as I was concerned that video was only meant for my friends and family. My privacy settings are at the maximum on Facebook.

“I keep my personal and my professional lives separate and I never let the fact that I’m a gas-head affect my work at Ashton Gate.

”But in my private life I have the right to express opinions.

“I live in a democratic country where I have the freedom and right to make a video to circulate to my friends.

“If I had gone and published it on YouTube then I could understand they would say something, but I didn’t.”
