David Wagner calls Huddersfield Town win lucky

Huddersfield Town head coach David Wagner has told the Yorkshire Post that their win over QPR was lucky.

After claiming a dramatic but controversial win over West Yorkshire rivals Leeds United last week, the Terriers were hoping to get back to business as usual when they faced QPR this weekend. And their promotion hopes were given a massive boost when they were able to get a 2-1 win over QPR.

Huddersfield seemed to have complete control in the first half with January transfer window signing Izzy Brown giving them the lead with a volley while Nahki Wells was able to double the lead just ten minutes later. However they were made to be nervous in the second half when QPR rallied and got a goal back through Luke Freeman and came close to getting an equaliser on a number of different occasions.

Because of this, Wagner believed they were very lucky to get out of West London with all three points, praising his goalkeeper Danny Ward for keeping them in the game.

He said: “We have to be honest; we were not at our best and I think we were lucky,”

“QPR were very good. They were very aggressive, created on the wings and our ’keeper Danny Ward was by miles the best player on the pitch, which I think says everything.”

“We got three lucky points, but three points are three points and we are so happy to have got them.”

“We should not forget also that we scored two wonderful goals and created other opportunities as well. But, in my opinion, QPR deserved more than they got. It doesn’t change that we have got the three points, though.”

“We scored two great goals and in the second half we were unable to keep the pressure off. But how we defended, and how Wardy kept us in the game and how we fought to keep the ball out of our net was great to see.”
