Sheffield Wednesday, Rhodes deal of huge benefit to Wednesday

Rhodes deal of huge benefit to Wednesday

Sky Bet Championship club Sheffield Wednesday are already reaping the rewards of signing Middlesbrough striker Jordan Rhodes on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 27-year-old Oldham born frontman provided an assist on his debut in The Owls’ winning goal at Wigan Athletic a little over a week ago while the player opened his Wednesday goalscoring account with an early strike in the club’s 3-0 home victory over Birmingham City at Hillsborough on Friday evening.

Rhodes will undoubtedly provide many more positive contributions to Carlos Carvalhal’s side before the end of his loan spell and his immediate impact has already raised questions over why the striker made such a little impression with parent club Middlesbrough.

Boro signed Rhodes from Blackburn Rovers 12 months ago for a reported initial transfer fee of £9 million but the player has made just 24 appearances for Boro with nine of those outings coming from the bench. Despite the striker’s lack of game time on Teesside, Rhodes managed six goals while the player made two assists for Aitor Karanka’s side.

At a time when Boro are fighting for Premier League survival and lacking goals, to ignore a out-and-out goalscorer like Rhodes seems something of a criminal decision and one which has already been questioned by many Boro fans but one club’s loss can be another’s gain and Sheffield Wednesday are no doubt delighted with the impact which the player has already made in South Yorkshire.
