Doncaster Rovers boss wins Sky Bet League Two manager award

This morning saw the release of the EFL monthly awards and Doncaster Rovers boss Darren Ferguson won the League Two Manager of the Month for January.

The South Yorkshire club started the month sitting in third place behind Plymouth Argyle and Carlisle United but an emphatic January has seen Doncaster rise to the top of League Two. Last month, Ferguson guided his team to win 15 points from five games, including an important 3-1 win over promotion rivals Portsmouth.

The 45-year-old Ferguson was happy to win the award and quick to praise the backroom staff,

“The team has played some very good football and scored three goals in four games during January, so it has been a brilliant month.

“Although it is an individual award, I feel it is recognition for my staff. It is a real team effort, including fans and everyone employed at the club. You can not do more than win five out of five matches.”

George Burley, who chairs the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel, praised Doncaster’s start to the year,

“It was a fantastic month for Doncaster Rovers having achieved a 100 per cent record winning all five games in January.

“Darren loves his team to play attacking football and they showed this by scoring 13 goals in the month.”

Doncaster Rovers travel to Newport County tonight in what will be an expected three points against the league’s bottom team. On Tuesday, Rovers play Carlisle United in an important clash against their promotion rivals who sit in third spot.
