Barnsley defender aims spiked barb at former striker

Barnsley’s Angus MacDonald has attracted plenty of attention after he aimed a spiked barb towards former player Sam Winnall on the club’s Twitter account.

Winnall had been one of the Tykes star players but elected to leave the club in the January transfer window to join their South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday, which caused plenty of anger among the fans back in Oakwell.

Now though the club has moved on and is aiming to keep up their challenge for the Sky Bet Championship play-off spots, there is obviously still some ill feeling as MacDonald looked to take a shot at the former player. During a fan Q&A on the official Twitter account, a fan asked how MacDonald would prepare to tackle Winnall when Barnsley face Sheffield Wednesday later on in the season.

And in a response many Barnsley fans have enjoyed, he simply said “He would have to be on the pitch first.”

Like the best insults, there is a grain of truth in it. While Winnall has made three appearances since moving to the Owls and has put in some good performances, he is yet to score and was dropped for the match against Wigan Athletic, being replaced by marquee signing Jordan Rhodes. And with other big name forwards such as Steven Fletcher and Gary Hooper close to returning from injury, Winnall may find himself dropping the pecking order very soon.

We will be able to find out if Winnall plays and how MacDonald will try and tackle him when Sheffield Wednesday take on Barnsley on April 1st.
