Grimsby set for more windfall over Bogle – clauses revealed

After 19 goals for Grimsby, it was obvious that some higher division sides would come sniffing around Blundell Park after the former West Brom youngster’s services. As it was, Wigan won the race in a ‘seven-figure’ deal that could rise according to the Grimsby Telegraph.

Grimsby had already turned down a big-money bid from Rotherham, reportedly around £850,000, but the 19 goals he scored indicated that his future looked to be away from North East Lincolnshire.

Wigan won the race for his signature on deadline day, with Grimsby director John Fenty saying that Leeds United were a team interested in Bogle’s services if they’d come in and “pipped” Wigan’s offer. However, Fenty said of Leeds that, “They weren’t prepared to do that,” with Bogle moving to the DW Stadium.

Not only did Grimsby sell Bogle for a fee upwards of £1 million, but club director Fenty revealed just how the Mariners will profit further from the deal, speaking about the additional clauses in the deal for the first time. The first clause Fenty revealed that the first of the clauses are the usual appearances and league survival add-ons saying: “If they maintain their Championship status this season, then there’ll be something associated to that. There’s also a clause related to the number of games Omar plays for them.”

He continued by referring to further clauses that the club had inserted: “If Wigan should one day return back to the Premier League, then there would also be another big boost – financially – to our club and also Solihull, who still enjoy a sell-on and benefit from any income related to his first move to us. We do also have a sell-on clause for Omar as well, which we felt was important in any deal that would have seen him leave us.”

Bogle began to pay back some of his £1 million+ fee with a well-taken brace of goals against Norwich last night that helped earn the Latics a vital point in their battle for Championship survival.
