Leeds had chance to gazump Wigan in Bogle deal

As reported in the Grimsby Telegraph, Leeds United had the chance to jump in ahead of Wigan and beat what the Latics had on the table for former Mariner Omar Bogle.

According to director and majority shareholder John Fenty, Leeds United were the ‘other club’ who had a last-minute opportunity to gazump Wigan and enter a higher bid to tempt Bogle to Elland Road.

Speaking specifically on this, Fenty said: “There was another club, which I now don’t mind revealing as Leeds United, who were tracking the interest in Omar and they had an opportunity, at the last minute on deadline day, to come in and pip what was being offered by Wigan.”

He continued to say that Leeds United didn’t press on with a deal, giving Bogle the chance to move to their Sky Bet Championship rivals Wigan Athletic and place himself firmly and squarely into a relegation battle.

Bogle was preferred to Will Grigg in last night’s game against Norwich City, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, and he started the game up top as a lone striker. The former West Brom youngster, who Grimsby picked up from National League North side Solihull Moors, scored a brace against the Canaries with a well-taken header and a neat free-kick.

Last night, Bogle’s brace definitely got Leeds United fans a little hot under the collar over on Twitter where they were keen to air their views on what many saw as a missed opportunity to bring in a goal-scoring striker to challenge Leeds’ top-scorer Chris Wood.

Bogle’s move to Wigan, that Leeds chose not to gazump, was for an undisclosed fee thought to be a seven-figure number and one that Grimsby Town director Fenty says comes with additional clauses that could line the Mariners’ pockets a little more profitably.
