Bruce’s Villa win record below career average

Aston Villa’s 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening opened a debate about whether manager Steve Bruce is the right man to take the club forward.

Some fans questioned the 56-year-old’s tactics, playing style and team selection on social media while the more patient supporters stated that the criticism is something of a knee jerk reaction and that Bruce needs the summer to resolve the club’s ongoing problems.

The72 takes a look at Bruce’s overall managerial record to see how his current Villa record compares to his previous managerial roles.

Bruce has now taken charge of 19 Villa matches with the club winning seven, drawing seven and losing five. His win ratio of 36.8% is slightly lower than his career average win percentage of 37.6%.

The Corbridge born manager’s best win ratio is 61.1% when he won 11 of his 18 matches in charge of Crystal Palace between 31 May 2001 and 2 November 2001. Bruce won 40.8% of his matches at previous club Hull City while he recorded a 40.0% win rate at Sheffield United in his first managerial role.

Bruce’s only other above average win percentage was recorded during his spell at Huddersfield Town where he won 37.9% of matches in charge. In Bruce’s previous eight managerial jobs he has won less matches than at Villa with just two other clubs, with those clubs being Wigan Athletic (33.8%) Sunderland (29.6%).

Aston Villa are currently going through a difficult period however one fact that cannot be ignored is that Bruce has been promoted from the Sky Bet Championship on four previous occasions and the former Manchester United centre back knows exactly what is required to be successful in the second tier.
