Barnet: the club where a doughnut costs £600

Two Barnet players are counting the cost of their sweet tooth after tucking into a doughnut costing £600 according to The Sun.

Now the doughnut itself wasn’t some Paul Hollywood Limited Edition Special sprinkled with gold leaf and grated unicorn dust, it was a simple run-of-the-mill doughnut. However, for eating it after an Under-23 match, to Barnet players have been stung a week’s wages – thought to be around £600.

The players, who have not been named, are said to have support from senior squad members who have said that they find the punishment meted out to them harsh and the PFA have been contacted. The PFA are said by The Sun to be looking to investigate the case, the newspaper stating that: “The PFA have been made aware of the incident and are looking into it to see whether the pair can appeal against their fine or get it reduced.”

Despite the PFA investigating the case and the club’s stance, the club itself is unrepentant over their policy and the ensuing fine. On the doughnut-duo, joint-interim manager Henry Newman said:

“We have strict nutritional guidelines and expectations over what players should be eating.

“Players know that they should be filling themselves up after matches with carbohydrates, rather than confectionary treats.

“Certain individuals fell well below our standards and as result two players were fined a week’s wages each.”

As it stands the two Bees youngsters have been stung for a £600 bill for their sweet-toothed failings and must now hope that involvement from the PFA will either cast aside the judgement or mediate it in some manner.
