Burton Albion sign Premier League winger

Burton Albion have made the transfer deadline day loan signing of Burnley winger Michael Kightly, as confirmed on the club website.

After impressing in non-league, the 31-year-old made his name for himself at Wolverhampton Wanderers as the winger won promotion from the Championship and made his Premier League debut in 2009. However, after making over 100 appearances for the West Midlands outfit, and Wolves falling to relegation from the top-flight, Kightly rejected a new contract at the club and joined Stoke City.

Today, the former England U21 international is playing his trade at Premier League Burnley and made 18 appearances in their promotion season last term but has struggled for game time this campaign with just nine appearances to his name. Kightly revealed that the move to Burton occurred quickly but ultimately the former Wolves man is happy to be at the Pirelli Stadium,

“Deadline day is a bit of a funny day you don’t know what is going to happen. I didn’t get told I could leave until late last night so it was a bit of a rush but obviously its nice to get a club like Burton and I’m looking forward to playing some football because I’ve not done that much recently.”

Kightly recognises the fight that his new club must face in the remaining months of the season and is looking forward to the game time:

“Hopefully I can come to Burton and show people at Burton what I can do – I’m looking forward to that. Playing football is what I want to do. I’m looking forward to knuckling down and working hard and trying to get into the Burton team.”

Kightly will give the Brewers squad a huge boost and brings a wealth of experience to Burton Albion. The Championship club are three points above the relegation zone.
