Wigan win race for Grimsby hotshot

Championship side Wigan Athletic have won the race to sign in-demand Grimsby Town striker Omar Bogle in an undisclosed deal, according to the Latics’ official website.

Having earlier had reported bids of £750,000 and £1-million turned down for the striker, the Latics have secured the 23-year-old’s services in a deal that could stretch well into seven figures.

Bogle has been one of the transfer window’s most talked about players, with a host of Championship clubs, including Leeds, Derby, Norwich, Brentford, Reading and Nottingham Forest all linked with the player.

Rotherham United had been the only side to table concrete bids for the former Birmingham City youngster but they had four offers turned down, with the highest of those rumoured to be only £850,000 after add-ons.

Premier League sides Swansea City and Hull City were linked on Monday, with Scottish Premier League outfit Rangers also rumoured on Twitter but Wigan’s long admiration of the ex-Solihull star has paid off with manager Warren Joyce bringing the player to the DW Stadium.

Wigan boss Joyce said: “Omar is a finisher, and he has scored goals at every level he has played at. He needs to take it to the next level now but we are convinced he has the attributes to be a success here.”

Bogle has hit 19 goals for the Mariners this season and his form has attracted a number of top scouts to Blundell Park in recent months. The move will also mean a windfall for his former club Solihull, who have a 20% sell-on fee over and above what Town paid for the player back in June 2015.
