Forest: Clough reveals reasons for turning down Nottingham job

Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough has revealed the reasons after turning down the chance to manage Nottingham Forest.

The former Derby County and Sheffield United boss was offered the job after Philippe Montanier departed the City Ground.

Clough said that he had been taught by his father to remain committed to his current role with the Brewers, and that was one of a number of reasons for turning down a job he has craved for many years.

“It was about loyalty and doing the right thing back then and it is the same now, I have a contract and a deal in place and I could not turn my back on that.

“I did not want to leave Burton in the lurch, I wanted to be loyal to the club, as they had given me another opportunity and we are committed to the challenge of keeping them in the Championship.”

There was speculation around the lack of consistency and structure at the City Ground, in complete opposite to the situation at Burton – where chairman Ben Robinson played a key role in the Brewers’ rise from non-league football to the Sky Bet Championship.

“This is not a reflection on Forest, because I still have a great affinity for the club; Forest still means a great deal to me.” the 50-year-old stated.

“This was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make in football but I believe that loyalty is important.

“And I would not rule anything out in the future.”
