Barnsley complete deal to sign Leicester City defender

Barnsley have completed a deal to sign Leicester City’s Callum Elder on loan for the rest of the season as confirmed by the club website.

The Tykes have suffered during this transfer window having lost of many of their key players with James Bree, Conor Hourihane and Sam Winnall all departing. But they have been doing their best to bring in players to replace them and now they have a new defender after Elder signed a deal that will keep him at Oakwell until the end of the season.

While the 22-year-old defender came through the Leicester academy, he has never made an appearance for their first team and all of his competitive experience has come while on loan to the other clubs. This season he started out with Brentford and while he began the year as a regular, making six appearances in the first two months of the season, he hasn’t played for the Bees since September. This led to Leicester terminating the deal so that they could loan Elder out to Barnsley where he will have a better chance of playing first team football.

After the signing was completed, his new head coach Paul Heckingbottom said: I’m really pleased to bring Callum in at such short notice. We made our interest clear and at the same time, Callum has jumped at the opportunity to join us. He fits the criteria of everything we are looking for as he’s a strong full-back who likes to operate up and down the channels, so he’ll be a big asset to our squad. Left-back is a position that we needed to reinforce, so that’s another tick in the box. He is ready for the Championship.”

“I’d like to thank Leicester once again for allowing Callum to develop his game with us and this again goes to show that the top Clubs are looking at Barnsley and acknowledging that we are an excellent place for young players to improve and succeed.”
