Wigan Athletic midfielder trades Championship for Spain

Sky Bet Championship side Wigan Athletic have lost midfielder Jordi Gomez to Rayo Vallecano on a loan-deal.

The former Espanyol midfielder signed for the Latics in the summer on a year long deal, but Gomez and failed to make a lasting impression this season – struggling to start just 12 times from the Club’s 27 league games.

Gomez – a Spanish U17 international – made just one appearance for his home nation, despite progressing through the youth development system at world football powerhouse Barcelona.

The 5ft 10in midfielder switched from Barcelona to Espanyol with whom he made 25 appearances for both their B and A sides.

A loan spell saw Gomez come to England for the first time with Swansea before spending five seasons at Wigan – four of which he played his trade in the top-flight of English football.

He then switched to Sunderland on a two-year deal. During his time with the Blackcats Gomez joined Blackburn Rovers on-loan – making 19 appearances and scoring three times – before re-joining the Latics this summer, with his former side now playing in the Championship.

Rayo Vallecano had their five-year spell in the top-flight ended last year and are now struggling to bounce-back, sitting two places above the relegation zone.
