Leeds to line-up replacement before midfielder sale to Barnsley

Leeds United midfielder Alex Mowatt’s move to Championship rivals Barnsley will only happen once his current club have secured a replacement, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay.

Earlier today, The72 reported that the two clubs were ‘closing in’ on agreeing a fee for the 21-year-old. Whilst both clubs are in discussions, a move is dependent on Leeds recruiting the players they are currently chasing.

The 21-year-old is a target for the South Yorkshire side, who sold Conor Hourihane to Championship rivals Aston Villa on Thursday.

Mowatt has fallen down the pecking order at the Whites under Garry Monk, but has featured in 20 games in all competitions, scoring one goal and assisting three.

At this stage, it is unclear the fee involved in the transfer. Despite his youthfulness, the player has made well over 100 appearances for the Elland Road club since being promoted to the first-team in 2013.

The midfielder was a crucial part of the Leeds side under former Head Coach Neil Redfearn, who built his side around promising youngsters Sam Byram, Lewis Cook, Charlie Taylor and Mowatt.

Meanwhile, Leeds United have been linked with a loan move for West Ham United striker Ashley Fletcher.

Leeds were linked with a £1.5 million move for Fletcher earlier this month, after identifying him as a potential target in the summer.

Fletcher has featured in 12 Premier League games so far this season but failed to find the net. His only goal has come in the 4-1 EFL Cup defeat to his former club Manchester United.

The forward has had better luck playing in Premier League 2, scoring three and assisting another in five appearances in the reserve competition.

Leeds currently sit in 3rd place in the Sky Bet Championship table following Wednesday night’s 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Elland Road.
