Notts County considering shock move for former England striker

League Two strugglers Notts County are set to launch a bid to bring former West Ham, Chelsea and England striker Carlton Cole to Meadow Lane, according to BBC Sport.

The 33-year-old is currently a free agent, having left American side Sacramento Republic last year after making just four appearances for the club, and the Magpies are looking to utilise his experience to ensure they avoid dropping out of the EFL at the end of the season for the first time in the club’s history.

County boss Kevin Nolan is familiar with Cole; they were team mates together at West Ham United under then-manager Sam Allardyce, and it remains to be seen whether or not the striker is willing to reunite with his former colleague.

He began his career at Stamford Bridge, progressing through the youth ranks before going on to make 25 appearances for the club and netting four times in the process.

During his time at Chelsea he was shipped out on loan to a number of sides, including Wolves, Aston Villa and Charlton Athletic.

In 2006 he made the switch to West Ham United for an undisclosed fee, and stayed with the Hammers until 2015, enjoying a lengthy and career-defining spell at Upton Park.

He scored 55 times in over 250 appearances for the club before his release, after which he had brief spells at Scottish giants Celtic and, most recently, United Soccer League outfit Sacramento Republic.

Notts County are languishing in the relegation zone in League Two after a very poor campaign so far; they are currently second from bottom, and a point from safety.

They take on Crawley Town at home on the weekend as they look to seal their first win of 2017.
