Former Sheffield United star attracting Premier League’s best

According to the Daily Star and The Sun, Everton and Southampton are both interested in signing former Sheffield United defender Harry Maguire, who has been a shining light in Hull City’s poor form this season.

The 23-year-old centre-back left Bramall Lane in 2014 to join Hull City in a £2.5 million move. Maguire made his Blades debut aged just 18 and quickly became a key member of the Sheffield United squad. The Sheffield-born defender made over 150 appearances during his time at S2 and formed a formidable defensive partnership with Neill Collins. Maguire was named the the PFA League One Team of the Year for three successive season and won three Sheffield United Player of the Year awards as he became a fan favourite.

At Hull, Maguire’s game-time has been limited since arriving at the KCOM Stadium. Prior to this season, Maguire had made just 39 appearances for the Tigers but has become an important member of the team this term. The former England U21 international has already accumulated 20 appearances and won a huge selection of admirers after his fine performances.

Following Hull’s 2-0 loss to league-leaders Chelsea at the weekend, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown was full of praise for Maguire, as well as taking note of his bursting attacking displays that Blades fans will be familiar with:

“As good a defensive performance as I’ve seen.

“He was dribbling with the ball, taking on the opposition – he’s got that in the locker.

“He’s quick, he’s strong.

“I’ve not seen a centre-half play this well.

“Costa the best striker in the Premier League is breathing down his neck – so what? He’s calm.”

Reports are now suggesting that Maguire is set to reject a new deal with the Tigers amidst interest from Southampton and Everton and The Sun report the youngster could leave Hull for just £7 million. The Toffees are looking for a long-term replacement for another ex-Blade Phil Jagielka and perhaps Maguire could be the man to do the job. Ronald Koeman is not afraid of exploring raw, young talent and has allowed untested players such as Tom Davies and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to showcase their ability this term.
