Done Deal: QPR playmaker makes China switch

QPR’s Dutch attacking midfielder Tjaronn Chery has signed for Chinese Super League club Guizhou Zhicheng for an undisclosed fee. The move was confirmed by the Championship club on Tuesday afternoon, in a statement on their official website.

Chery had been at the centre of intense speculation throughout the January transfer window, with a handful of Chinese teams reportedly battling to land the player’s signature. The 28-year-old allegedly handed in a transfer request at Loftus Road following the interest from China, and as a result the move was completed with reluctant co-operation from the London club.

QPR manager Ian Holloway told the club website of his disappointment following Chery’s transfer: “When he heard of the interest from Guizhou, he made it clear that was a move he wanted to pursue.Whilst it’s disappointing to lose a player of Tjaronn’s ability, I only want players at QPR who want to be here.”

“As a manager, when a player tells you he wants to leave with 18 months left to run on their contract, it’s in the club’s best interests to part ways and bring in players who want to play for the club.”

Chery joined QPR in 2015 following their relegation from the Premier League, and went on to make 59 appearances for the club, scoring seven times in the process.

His new team, Guizhou Zhicheng, are newcomers to the Chinese Super League, having won promotion from the country’s second tier last season.

QPR welcome strugglers Burton Albion to Loftus Road on Saturday, as they look to return to winning ways following last weekend’s draw to local rivals Fulham.
