Ex-Newcastle, Ipswich and Cardiff striker starts training with Hartlepool

Former Cardiff City and Ipswich Town striker Michael Chopra is training with League Two side Hartlepool United, with a view to signing a permanent deal, according to the Sunderland Echo.

He has linked up once again with former manager Dave Jones at Victoria Park as he looks to re-establish himself in the English game; the 33-year-old last played for Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters, scoring a single goal in just under 20 appearances for the club.

Prior to this, he enjoyed successful spells at a number of English sides.

After progressing through the youth ranks at his hometown club, Newcastle United, and spending time out on loan at Watford, Nottingham Forest and Barnsley, he moved to Cardiff City in 2006 as a result of a lack of first-team football.

His first season for the club was a highly successful one; Chopra averaged a goal every other game, having scored 22 times in 44 appearances.

His successes in a blue shirt earned him a return to the Premier League with Newcastle’s rivals Sunderland the following year, but after a season and a half on Wearside he returned to Cardiff for a then-club-record fee.

He also had less successful spells at Ipswich Town and Blackpool in the latter stages of his career in England, and in 2015 had a brief stint in Scotland with Championship club Alloa Athletic.

New Hartlepool boss Dave Jones is looking to add quality to his ranks before the end of the month, with his side in danger of becoming involved in another relegation battle at the wrong end of League Two.

Should Chopra sign a deal with the Pools, it would be the third time that Jones has signed the player during his managerial career.

They take on Newport County away from home this weekend, as they look to continue their winning run of form; they have taken maximum points from their last two league games.
