Wigan Athletic target Derby County outcast as new star striker

Wigan Athletic are targeting Derby County’s Nick Blackman to be their new star striker according to a report from Page 57 of The Sun.

During the last January transfer window, Blackman was being targeted by a number of clubs but he ended up choosing to join Derby County who were in the play-offs at the time and were trying to get automatically promoted. However things haven’t worked out for him ever since he made the switch to the iPro Stadium. He was often utilised on the wing in his first few months at the club, which didn’t work out for obvious reasons, and is now struggling to break back into the first team.

And with Blackman currently on the outside looking in at Derby, it does look likely that he may be leaving before deadline day. And one team who will be hoping to snap him up are Wigan, who have a serious problem scoring goals. They have only netted 24 times this season, with last year’s star Will Grigg certainly not being on fire as he has only hit the back of the net on seven occasions this season, with must of them coming back in August and September.

If the Latics are to stay in the Sky Bet Championship this season, they are only not in the relegation zone because of their goal difference, they know they need more goals and with Blackman previously proving he can mix it in this league, he could be their new star striker and replace an out of form Grigg.
